This Lovelight has everything. Excellent playing, some feedback, some spacing around, Pigpen making fun of the audience and hollering at Garcia for stepping on his lead, Bobby freaking out, and out-and-out funkiness. Great recording too.

The GRATEFUL DEAD "Live On Stage" April 11, 1970, at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, U.S.A.
Thirty nine years ago today the GRATEFUL DEAD played the Fillmore West and here is what a tiny part of the show sounded like.
Click the DeadLists Project link and get the poster for the this show.
"A Must Have Show" for all collectors of Pigpen.

Wish there was more...

one of my 3 all-time personal favorite GD shows
My top 3 Grateful Dead shows, out of all the shows that I ever attended (approx 25 from 1970 to 1992), are all from 1970!
I'm pretty sure I went to my first GD show on April 11th 1970, not the 10th (set list for the 10th exists but no audio)
because I'm fairly certain I saw them do Saint Stephen,
otherwise I would have been slightly disappointed if they hadn't played St Stephen,
the song that initially interested me in seeing them in concert after hearing it on the 1st live GD tape cassette I heard (prior to the April '70 show), when by chance walking by the back lawn at Lowell HS the song was just starting it's opening riff and hooked me right in.
April 11th, 1970 - Fillmore West
Grateful Dead headlining; with Miles Davis 2nd on the bill
Cold Rain And Snow
I'm A King Bee
Beat It On Down The Line
It's A Man's World
Don't Ease Me In
New Speedway Boogie
Friend Of The Devil
Me And My Uncle
Deep Elem Blues
Uncle John's Band
Not Fade Away
Turn On Your Love Light
Of course, not much of April 11th (and none of the 10th) is currently in circulation.
Yet this imho is a truly great version of Lovelight!

Pigpen the Matchmaker
Could not disagree more with the previous reviewer. this Lovelight packs a punch!
The Shine on Me harmonies in the intro are perfect
Pigpen is probably indirectly or completely responsible for many marriages as a result of seeing the Dead between 65-71
Pigpen is really at his bad ass self best
The background stuff the Dead are laying down behind Pigpen is very wild
I love the way Bobby starts out slowly and then lets loose with some Shine on Me with Pig egging the whole freakin band & probably audience to a giant fuzzy climax
The crashing cymbals are pretty cool as well.

short, but sweet???????
Good sound for the era, but the boys couldn't get this one off the ground. After an out of tune fade into NFA, the band runs through the end of the song without any fire. Lovelight starts out sloppy, everybody's trying, but it aint' happenin'. There is a strange little jam at about 18 min. that reminds me of zeppelin, on something good. Bobby goes nuts at the end, which I enjoy much, but all in all, they can't get it together. The final minute or so seems like one last shot at it, but again falls short. 3 stars for effort and because I love '70 dead.
